Foundation Games - Davis' Blanco scores 30 again
Results from Monday's heavy menu for the Foundation Games officially
don't count for or against a team's basketball record, but it was
hard to discount what Angel Blanco did ... again.
Blanco followed up a 30-point, 20-rebound opener with 30 points
and 19 rebounds for host Davis in its 56-39 victory over Golden
Valley.
The 5-foot-11-inch senior scored 18 points in the first half to
help the Spartans take a 30-19 lead and finished with six steals
and two blocked shots.
"She's really utilizing her athleticism, and I think she's
discovering where she can play and how she can best help our team.
She's worked hard on her game all summer, and it's beginning to
pay off," Davis coach Joe Ovalle said, adding that last season,
Blanco was confined to the post. "Having worked on her handles,
she can create, and she's blessed with great leaping ability and
has a great sense for the ball."
Blanco turned five of her 12 offensive rebounds into baskets.
She also scored on several assists from Davis' 1-2 guard combination
of Erin Ovalle and Kayla Williams. Ovalle had seven assists and
Williams six. Each had 10 in Davis' season opener.
HUGHSON 50, WATERFORD 24, at Hughson -- Alyssa Hobby and Pauline
Ducharme each had five of the Huskies' 28 steals in their win over
the Wildcats. Hughson also had 15 assists. Anna Yardy led the Huskies
with 13 points and eight rebounds.
RIVERBANK 29, JOHANSEN 26, at Johansen -- Vanessa Rodriguez made
two 3-pointers in the last three minutes to help the Bruins defeat
the Vikings. She also led Riverbank with three steals. Courtney
Brock had nine rebounds for the Bruins.
TURLOCK 59, DOWNEY 40, at Downey -- Samantha Bertoman scored a
game-high 20 points to lift the Bulldogs over the Knights. Latoya
Oldham scored 15 points and had seven of Downey's 15 steals.
ORESTIMBA 55, DENAIR 40, at Newman -- Samantha Huerta had nine
of the Warriors' 29 steals and scored 12 points in the win over
the Coyotes.
High School Boys
CERES 63, DOWNEY 58, at Ceres -- 6-foot-5-inch center Kevin Dupree,
a third-year varsity starter, scored 14 of his game-high 27 points
in the fourth quarter to help the Bulldogs hold off the Knights.
Dupree was 8 for 10 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
RIPON CHRISTIAN 64, EAST UNION 36, at Ripon Christian -- Adrian
den Dulk had 14 points and 15 rebounds, including six points in
the first quarter to help the Knights take a 17-7 lead over the
Lancers. Tom Terpstra scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth
period for Ripon Christian. Reid Van Duyn had seven assists for
the Knights.
GOLDEN VALLEY 63, DAVIS 37, at Davis -- The Cougars started with
a 19-9 run in the first quarter and continued to pull away from
the Spartans. Alex Fletcher made three 3-pointers and scored 11
points for Golden Valley.
"They took it to us. They were ahead the whole time,"
Davis coach Chris Guptill said.
BEYER 50, OAKDALE 46, at Beyer -- Blake Barber led the Patriots
on an 18-8 blitz in the fourth quarter with two of his four 3-pointers.
Barber led Beyer with 12 points.
BIG VALLEY CHR. 64, TURLOCK CHR. 62 (2 OTs), at Turlock -- Eli
Davis hit a 12-foot shot for Turlock Christian to send the game
to overtime, but his 17-footer missed in the second overtime missed
after Big Valley went ahead. Jared Lunsford scored five of his 28
points in the second overtime and totaled 11 rebounds for Big Valley.
RIVERBANK 63, JOHANSEN 55, at Johansen -- Ray Baca's 3-pointer
with two minutes left put the Bruins ahead by nine over the Vikings.
